The Ass is four years in growing, and lives twenty-five or thirty. The milk of the Assis medicinal. The flesh of young wild asses is said to be delicate. The skin is manufactured into thick vellum, and into shagreen. The mule is a creature springing from an union of the ass with the mare, which produces large mules, or of the horse with the she-ass, which pro- duces small mules. The first is the best, and most generally used: it has the legs and shape of the horse, the ears, the tail, and the cross of the Ass.
