THE JAGUAR. Tue Jaguar holds the same rank among the animals of the American continent, as the tiger among those of Asia. On the upper part of its body it is of a bright yellowish-fawn color, which passes, on the throat, breast, and other under parts, into a pure white. On this ground, the head, limbs, and under surface are covered with . full black spots of various sizes, and the rest of the body with rings, having black spots in the centre. This animal is found in the swampy forests of South America, especially in the neighborhood of large rivers, which he swims with great ease. (18)
