Water loss from a drainage basin is the difference between the average rainfall over the basin and the runoff from the basin for a given period (Williams, 1940, p. 3). In humid regions, where there is sufficient water to satisfy the demands of vegetation, the mean annual water loss is principally a function of temperature (Langbein, 1949, p. 7).
