PRELIMINARY REPORT ON PEAT. 339 SAURURACEAE. Lizard's-tail Family. Saururus cernuus L. Rather common in swamps and ponds where the water-level varies from about a foot above the surface to an inch or so below. Oftener in muddy or calcareous than in sour swamps. Sometimes in open marshes, but oftener in the shade of trees, and therefore not usually on good peat. Extends southward to DeSoto County at least. Widely but irregularly distributed in the Eastern United States.
