Extension of the Cristobal Mole.

The preliminary borings for the extension of the Cristobal mole, which
were commenced on February 9, 1916, were finally completed in Septem-
ber, 1916. On June 10, 1916, work was started on a trestle to be used for
dumping soft rock for an extension to the Cristobal mole; this work was
completed March 17, 1917.

Approach Fill for Pier 6 and Fill for Track Yard.

The construction of the approach fill and fill for track yard for Pier 6
was started on June 12, 1916, and by December 31 of the fiscal year 1916-
1917 the work was completed with a total quantity of 129,448 cubic yards
in place at a total cost of $45,327.42, or $0.35 per yard.

Boat Landing and Launch House Between Piers 7 and &.

Work on this boat landing and launch house was commenced on Sep-

tember 15, 1916. All work on the substructure was completed with the
completion of the concreting of the cylinders on May 27, 1917. It has
not been possible to do any further construction work on the boat landing
due to the fact that no floor steel has yet been received.

Improvements 7n Roadways.

In February, 1917, a new 30-foot road for an entrance to the docks
was commenced and completed in April. The surface in front of Piers
8 and 9, which was formerly grass plot, was also concreted over, increasing
to a great degree traffic facilities of the docks. The area in front of the
new local freight warehouse was also concreted.

Pier 6.

Construction of Pier 6 was commenced July 21, 1916. Congress has
appropriated for this the sum of $1,500,000.00. It is expected to com-
plete all work on the cylinders not later than November, 1917, and to
complete the work on the concrete floor by May, 1918, at which date the
paving of the floor may be started provided no delay may be encountered
in securing the shed steel. It is believed this pier will be completed on or
before December 31, 1918, when same will be turned over to the Panama
Rail Road Company for operation.
