However, it was soon found necessary to enlarge the cold-storage plant by refrigerating the entire second floor for the storage of vegetables, and to increase the ice-making capacity of that plant by 22 tons per day, which was done. Karly in this year it became apparent that some means would have to be provided to increase our ice-making capacity by the installa- tion of a tank capable of producing 25 tons additional, making a total capacity of 97 tons daily. In this country, where the climate is even the year around, there are no opportunites to shut down the machines to make necessary repairs to keep the plant up to a stand- ard of efficiency. Early in the year I recommended the purchase of a 300-ton compressor that, would have a capacity for running the entire refrigerating and ice-making plant, thus providing an oppor- tunity to shut down the other compressors when necessary to repair them and provide compressor capacity to properly take care of the additional refrigerating space and ice-making capacity added. My recommendations were approved and the compressor was purchased. The installation of this compressor began during the month of June and will be completed soon. A rearrangement of the piping system in the power plant was necessary for economy and in connection with the installation of new compressor, and this work is now under way. New ammonia condensers, complete, and improved water cooling system were installed. : : The location of the new ice tank on the second floor made it neces sary to construct a new ice storage room. Advantage was taken of this to perfect a plan for handling ice by gravity into the 11 cars loaded daily. This system admits of the ice being loaded outside of the cold-storage loading corridor, thus eliminating the slop and con- densation heretofore attendant in the handling of ice. During the year the electric-light plant was discontinued and arrangements were made by the Isthmian Canal Commission for power from Gatun through two converters located in our plant, which supply electric current for lighting Panama Railroad and
