At this mass neetirn; it was formally -,re that the t'-o ssooi- ations should unite and carry 'on a constructive pror;-.n looking forward toward rehabilitation of this Industry. As you know the picture here is a rather sad one. Its volume is down to about half of what it was two or three yer.rs ;-0o and I an. very certain that the profits have entirely dioppepred, The Labor Unions P.re maakinr a stiff fight on the matter of Industry removing itself from New York City to other parts of the country. They are at present taking issue with one particular concern .ho a w-eel: or two ago removed its factory from this city to HIp.ssachusetts. So stron;Alr do the Unions feel that they are mal-ing an issue of it with the 1N-7A and there will be a hearing at #45 3ro-dwaay, this morning at 10 AU., at which I am to be present, resp)ecti-2i- this con laint. The story back of this removal is an interesting; one. Both HIr. 2arr and myself have trken the position that there is not':in-: that )rohlbits the removal of a'factory from one -,!,-ce to another, but as I understood it the Union insists that the manufacturer in question take along with him all of the employees wor12in- in New York. The in-nufrcturer refuses to do this on the following grounds. As a result of shrin:r.-. 'e in his c. it,-l and assets he could no longer obtain br-": accom:.odtions in the city of New York.
