In a recent team game, one South chose to open five clubs and was raised to slam by his partner. At the other table, South chose to open a"Gambling three no trump," showing a solid minor suit with no outside stopper. This bid usually shows a seven-card suit, sometimes eight, but there are no bids that show nine! North made a very cautious pass he might well have bid six clubs. Should partner have only seven club tricks, he would have 11 top tricks and good chances for 12, especially as he would be declarer on that sequence. The five-club opening won the day, but note that there are 13 top tricks available in either clubs or no trump. We like an opening bid of one club. The given sequence would have been routine for a pair playing Key Card Blackwood. South's five spade response shows two "key" cards out of five the four aces and the trump king plus the trump queen. The five no trump continuation asks for kings, but it is never made without interest in a potential grand slam. As such, it promises that the partnership holds all the important slam cards, meaning aces and high trumps. It is an invitation for responder to bid seven if he can count 13 tricks with that information. South would bid seven clubs in a heart-beat! BIBLE "He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abun- dance with increase: this is also vanity."-Ecclesiastes 5:10. Material prosperity, no matter how much, can't satisfy the hunger of a human heart. Only Jesus can satisfy your soul.
