The Pirates and Calloway County (Ky.) put on a high-energy display during both teams' Sapphire Division opener. In a race to the finish, the third quarter doomed Port Charlotte in a 65-50 loss. Port Charlotte trailed 33-31 at the half, but the Lakers came out firing in the third. Calloway County scored 14 of the quarter's first 17 points during a 5-minute spurt, to pull ahead 47-34. Taylor Lindsey completed a three-point play at the 7-minute mark for the only Pirates' points in that time. "We ran out of gas," Port Charlotte coach Kevin Purcell said. "That is the kind of competition we were hoping to play down here. That was an incredible first quarter, then we sort of lost our juice a little bit." The Pirates (12-4) eventually rediscovered their offense through ball movement and patient shot selection. They closed the gap to seven when Katie Stewart split a pair of free throws with 6 minutes remaining, but they drew no closer. The game started at breakneck speed, both squads running fast- breaks and pushing the * GIRLS BASKETBALL: Brai Charlol big ear By PETE SISK SUN CORRESPONDENT FORT MYERS- A cold start left Charlotte High School out in the cold in the Queen of Palms Tournament. The Tarpons lost 51-34 to Braden River on Friday in the first round of the tournament's Amber Division at Cypress Lake High School. The Tarpons (3-12) face Seminole Ridge at noon today. Seminole Ridge fell 45-37 to Tampa Bay Tech on Friday. Braden River (5-11) jumped to a 17-4 lead after one quarter Friday, and the Tarpons were un- able to mount a serious challenge thereafter. "They came down and hit their first four jump shots, and they made a lot after that," Charlotte coach Mike Robishaw said. While the Pirates did press early, it wasn't pressure that frustrated the Tarpons. It was a combination of cold shooting and turnovers on the offensive end, while Braden River was hitting baskets on its end. "We'd played against them before," Robishaw said. "We knew they were going to run that press early. We did a good job. We broke it. We got them out of it. "I thought our shot se- lection wasn't bad.
