Lear railed against ex- tremism from either the left or right. "1 don't like reflexive attitudes on anything, liberal or conservative. Things have to be thought out in- dividually." But Lear drew a distinction between liberal extremism and what he calls "ultra- fundamantalists" by evoking the memory of slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., who preached the spirit of the great religions and civil leaders of peace.
