He aims to put God and prayer back into the public school system, and he sees this as s struggle against his belief that "Everywhere we turn, Christian values are assaulted and are in retreat. As Christians, we are not going to take it anymore." But Grant's enemies also include rapprochement with the Soviet Union as defined by SALT II and U.S. policy in Zimbabwe Rhodesia and in Taiwan, where "Christian allies were thrown to the wolves." Many people, not necessarily Christian and many of them self- proclaimed liberals, would agree with Grant if only on these last two issues, but it is Grant's deliberate exclusion of them from his philosophical ranks if not from the ranks of his faithful, and his labeling of them as "Satan's strategy" and as "the new gospel of permissiveness," that make him and the movement itself so dangerous. In his intention only to support conservative Christian political candidates and to op- pose liberals, he has thrown down an unmistakable gauntlet. JUNE TOTTEN, of the Wash- ington Interreligious Staff Council, calls Christian Voice "a distortion of religious values." Speaking for the Council, which is a coalition of Protestant, Catholic and Jewish sentiment, Totten declares that "It (Chris- Voice have in mind for the Jews? A mere sampling of Christian Voice television fare makes sly but constant reference to Golgotha, the Pharisees, the Sanhedrin and the "businessmen of the Temple" as the "enemies of tian Voice) seems to be a vary politicized group (that) . could lead to bigotry." Totten is right. Christian Voice aims to divide, not unite. Ideo- logical architect Jarmin separates American Christendom between liberals, whom he labels "a tiny minority" inconsistent with the principles of Chris- tianity, and the majority who are "basically conservative." What, indeed, must Christian Jesus" and of Christianity today. IF, as Grant and Jarmin expect, the object of Christian Voice is to put contemporary American political issues into "Christian language" for grass- roots America, what it has in mind for Jews should be crystal clear. We can not rely on the last hope of a Sen. Mark Hatfield (R., Ore.) who declares that "It's very presumptuous to say that any organization is the bona fide expression of Christians. It's a simplistic notion. People are going to have different opinions." In Hatfield's reaction to Christian Voice, there is the impulse to believe that it will go away. The trouble is that it is sim- plistic notions that seize the troubled imaginations of men, not complex ones. And in the current year, Christian Voice has | budgeted SI million for its operations, including the pro- duction of those simplistic programs for the "electronic church" television circuit. In 1980, it expects to spend $3 million. The message in thjs for all of us interested in freeoom, Jew and Christian, can not be mistaken.
