Silent No More
Resolution on Cultural Events
WHEREAS, the Jews of the USSR are being subjected to an
intensified campaign of cultural and spiritual annihilation;
WHEREAS three million Jews are denied the right to practice
their religion in the USSR;
WHEREAS many thousands still await exit visas after un-
dergoing the harrowing process of applying to leave;
WHEREAS the USSR continues to separate families in direct
violation of the 1975 Helsinki Accord which it signed;
WHEREAS Jewish refuseniks" continue to live a life in limbo
with no jobs, no income, no higher education for their children but
rather daily harassment and the constant threat of arrest;
WHEREAS Soviet authorities ahve instituted an intensive and
virulent campaign of anti-Semitism in their press and television:
WHEREAS Jewish Prisoners of Conscience languish in mental
hospitals and in slave labor camps their only crime being their de-
sire to emigrate to their historic homeland. ISRAEL;
WHEREAS at this critical time, support of Soviet-American cul-
tural and athletic exchange could be interpreted as condoning such re-
pression;
THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED that the Community Relations
Committee of the Jewish Federation of South Broward calls upon the
American Jewish community to stand in solidarity with the oppressed
Jews of the Soviet Union by examining its conscience before attending
or supporting Soviet cultural or sporting events
THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED that it is altogether appro-
priate to peacefully protest at these events, for our failure to do so
might be construed as indifference or even tacit approval of the con-
tinuing harassment of Soviet Jews.
