Rabbi Joan Glazer To Join Schaarai Zedek When Rabbi Joan Glazer Farber joins Congregation Schaarai Zedek as assistant rabbi, it will be a first in many ways. There have been no other assistant rabbis in the area. Rabbi Frank Sundheim joined Congregation Schaarai Zedek as Associate Rabbi to Rabbi David L. Zielonka, the difference being that Rabbi Sundheim was the designated successor to Rabbi Zielonka. While she is the first woman to be a permanent rabbi in the Tampa Bay area. Congre- gation Schaarai Zedek had Rabbi Susan Berman serve as summer rabbi, two years ago during Rabbi Sundheim's sabbatical. Rabbi Joan Glazer Farber, who will join the staff of Congregation Schaarai Zedek in July, is a native of Baltimore, Md., and is a confirmand of Baltimore Hebrew Congregation. Her family's in- volvement in Reform Judaism has been deep and of long standing. As a teenager, Rabbi Farber was Vice President of the Baltimore Hebrew Congregation Youth Group and was the chap- lain of the Middle Atlantic Federation of Temple Youth (MAFTY). Rabbi Farber is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and will be ordained on May 27 by the New York School of Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion. In addition to her rabbinical ordination, she will simultaneously receive a MA in Secondary Education from New York University. During Rabbi Farber's years in college and rabbinical school, she has con- tinued her interest in youth and education. She has taught in reli- gious schools and has been a Program Coordinator for youth programs in various commu- nities. She has also served on the faculty of UAHC, Camp Harlam, and was coordinator of the Learning Center at the NFTY National Kutz Camp in Warwick, N.Y. She has served student pulpits in Canton, N.Y.; Staunton, Va.; and presently in New Castle, Pa. One of her particular interests has been in the field of counsell- ing. She has been a participant in several courses in bereavement counselling sponsored by the New York Board of Rabbis, and presently is a chaplain at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. During her years in the New York School, she has won several honors for academic excellence and has recently submitted her thesis on the "ubject of intermar- riage as reflected in some of the rabbinical interpretations of the Biblical Book of Ruth. Rabbi Farber is married to An- drew Farber who is a senior con- sultant in the New York firm of Peat, Marwick, Mitchell and Co.'s Information Systems Services group. He specializes in computer security. Tampa Bay Area Jewish Singles Conference In response to recently heightened awareness of the needs of Jewish singles, several organizations in co-operation with Tampa Jewish Social Service, have joined together to present the first Tampa Bay Area Jewish Singles Conference. The conference, which will be held on Sunday, June 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Congregation Kol Ami, will focus on issues related to being single and Jewish in the Tampa Bay Area. Sandy Freedman, Chairman of the Tampa City Council, will present the keynote address. In addition, several workshops will take place on subjects ranging from the single's "meet market" to single parenting. In the workshop on The Singles "Meet Market Is It Kosher?", Jean Sasmor, RN, EdD, FAAN, educator at the University of South Florida School of Nursing, will explore "intimacy, relationships and sexuality." Steven J. Kaplan, PhD, Director of the USF Hillel Foundation of B'nai B'rith will present a workshop on "Being Single and Jewish in a Coupled World." "Being Alone as an Alternative (a new definition of completeness)" will be led by Michael Rothburd, PhD The fourth workshop will deal with "Single Parenting raising children alone while readjusting to a new single lifestyle" and will be led by Tina Henson, DSW, an instructor in the School of Social Work at the University of South Florida. Earlier this year SchZFTY (which stands for Schaarai Zedek Federation of Temple Youth) held a program on poverty and hunger. Over 35 youth group members worked at the Purim Carnival helping to make this donation possible. According to Mrs. Alter, 30 volunteers of the Jewish Community Food Bank this week provided bags of groceries to 45 families which represented 125 individuals.
