THE HEBREW-ENGLISH CALENDAR I his year’s Directory contains as usual a Hehrew-English Calendar, which has proven its worth as a valuable appendix to this publica¬ tion, and which has become a ne¬ cessity in Jewish homes because of its frequent use throughout the year. J he calendar is printed upon suc¬ cessive pages, and enables one to use this portion of the book as a complete calendar (Luach). I he Hebrew side of the calendar contains the Hebrew names of the festivals, holidays, and fast days. I he weekly portion of the law to be read each Saturday is indicated in capital letters. A reminder to light the Sabbath candles or ike festival candles (L. C.) appears op¬ posite the proper days. 1 he English side of the calendar contains the English names of ike lesti vals and holidays and a calen¬ dar of the important events of the various Jewish organizations meet¬ ing in the Center or holding their affairs there. I his feature has been found to be very valuable, giving each organization an opportunity to plan lor their respective under¬ lain ngs without conflicting with the other organizations. It is also the beginning of the 10 days of Penitence, which end with Yom Kippur. Sincere prayer and meditation during these days help us to experience the reality of God to dedicate ourselves anew to the establishment of His Kingdom on earth—the reign of freedom, justice and peace. 2) Shabbat Shuba derives its name from the Haftorah of that day. Hosea xiv, 2-10 which begins with the word S'hubah-'Return’, i.e., Repent. 3) Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) is a day of fasting and prayer, when we strive to reawaken the latent spiritual power in our souls so that it may become an effective and directing force in our daily conduct'. 4) Sukkos (Feast of Tabernacles) is the Jewish festival of thanksgiving after all the products of the field have been gathered in. The Sukkah symbolizes '.he wanderings of our ancestors in the wilderness of Sinai. 5) Simchath Torah (Rejoicing in the Torah) is the second day of Shemini Azereth. Then the reading of the Pentateuch is completed and begun anew for the coming year. This event is celebrated with Hakofos—procession with the scrolls of the Torah to the accompaniment of songs and dancing. 6) Rosh Chodesh is the term for the beginning of a new month. As the Jewish year is based on the lunar calendar, the beginning of the new month coin¬ cides with the new moon. When a month has thirty days, the last is considered the first of the two days which constitute Rosh Chodesh of the month following. NEW WAY POULTRY CO.
