Page 10-A fJewist} fkrfcfijr Friday. July 25, 1969 THE RABBI SPEAKS FROM HIS PULPIT Most Touching Episodes B< RABBI RALPH P. KING8LBV People Sinai of North Hade One of the most touching pi- les in all of the Bible is the i with which this week's |>orlion Y.i Kthehanan begins. Moses. who had lost his temper in a mo- ment ot impa- tience, and who w as therefore denied entry in to the Promisi d Land, pours out his heart in a last, di sperate attempt to get God ''i "change His mind." as it were. Mo ses "hi sought t h e text, with tin' go over, l pray Rabbi Kingsfey 'id." says the rds, "Let me ice, and see the good land that is yond the Jordan ." rhere is pathos in his anguished ' "i course, his words arc j r naught. "Let it suffice thee; i ak no more unto Me of this I ter." So n plies God, therebj . forming pour Moses that the - bjeel is no longer open for dis- ssion Yet, the matter is not alfy (I. I-., d. for there follows still oluSer verse which adds dimen- in to what h;>N gone before: "Get << up into the top ol Pisgah and it thinr eyes westward and north- nil and southward and eastward, d behold with thine eyes ." id in that particular verse, there n In- found a groat insight into < nature and limits oi prayer, Kach oi us has b< one time or < other poured out his heart in ayerful yearning, requesting this .or or that from the Almighty. i often the response is not the io we seek, and we w o n d e r aether God really listens or real- cares, What we forget, at such nos, is that we do not stand one and that our needs of the imcnt may not Ix1 in consonance .th the need-; or plan of the uni- rso. It is th. n that the text ro- mds us to look to the north, nth. east or west. We need to cognize that God is not. as Rabbi Roland Gittelsohn om-e put it. a cosmic bellhop" who waits upon our every desire. At best, through prayer we can seek to make God's needs our needs, and His demands our demands. The reverse is not always possible. A little boy once complained bitterly to his mother that God did not answer his prayer, for ho failed to get a bicycle for his birth- day. "But you are wrong," said his mother. "God did answer your prayer. Only, He said. No.' " Local Kahln At Scout Jamboree Rabbi Charli s Rubel. spiritual leader of B'nai Raphael, is spend- ing his vacation working with Jew- ish children and conduct inn serv- U i t at the National Boy Scout Jamboree in Idaho. Rabbi Rubel was invited by Dr. Harry Lasker, Jewish Relationship Director of the Hoy Scouts of America. Ho is one of six Jewish chaplains working in various loca- tions of the Farragut State Park. Upon his return. Rabbi Rubel will present a report on his ex- periences at the Jamboree at the I first late Friday night ser\ ice oi the now season. Choir Prepares For High Holy Day Services The senior choir of Temple Adath Yeshurun of North Miami Beach has started preparation for High Holy Day services. The choir this year will present more elab- orate classical music for Jewish worship. A few more male voices will bo accepted. Cantor Tibor Moses has announced. The Amalfkitos, a hostile trilte mentioned several time* in the Hil.le, were a nomadic people who wandered in Southern Palestine and Canaan. They were defeatod I'.v Joshua and later In Saul, hut they continued attacking Israelite settlements. They were finally de- feated by David near Ziklau in Southern ludea. (JTA) I Question j Box Bv RABBI SAMUEL J. FOX Why did the Bible prescribe that the two oheruliim figures lie pi a red on the Ark.' A number of reasons are given. Maimonidos claims that they rep- resent the angels who serve as an intermediary to transport the in- spiration of the Almighty to man's world through the revelation of His spirit. Their presence thus in- dicates that whatever the Proph- ets prophesied is true. This point ol view indicates that just as one must believe in the existence of the Almighty he must believe that the Almighty can make known His word to man. Another reason given is that this is a demonstration of the love of the Almighty for His people of Israel when they hoed His word watching over them with the spirit of love, such as is dem- ' onst rated by the cherubim figures who lace each other. Another reason given is that the : presence of the cherubim on top of the Ark serve as a symbol that those who study the Torah (which is in the Ark) should try to emu- late the angels who serve God constantly. Sonio claim that the' cherubim represent the children and tiny thus remind us of our; obligation to keep our children close to the Torah as the cherubim are close t,, the Ark. Others, com- menting in this same vein claim that the youth-like image of the cherubim remind us that the teaching ol our youth is the prim.' guarantee of our future. There arc seme who claim that the cherubim I represent the flaming figures who watch over the entrance of the Garden of Eden from which Adam ' v. as banished. Their presence in- j dieatos that man can some day return to God and be forgiven anil thus regain his original place in Paradise. It may well be, moreover, that this Judgment of tin' Communists is not really self-deluding any more. Altogether, then, it is extreme- ly curious to look at France to- day, and to remember what was predicted for France only 1-1 months ago. It teaches a sharp lesson, too, that ought not to be forgotten in the United States The violence of the French New Left in fact ended by fright- ening just about everyone. It consolidated the solid, sensible- conservative majority, above- mentioned. It even caused the Communists to go to work in earnest, using every means to insure that they would not again lose oeotrol ol .\ents. as hap- pened in the May crisis. Everything the New Left fid, In fact, produced exactly the opposite of the d. sired n Among the troops oi the New Left, tin re were, of course. a good many who did not give a damn about the results who merely wanted the feeling of warm togetherness that irra- tional v iolence seems to gi i among certain sorts ol stud< nti Bui to those who are not wi d- ded to irrationality as a way ol life, the French lesson is worth pondering.
