Pcce 12-A * Jc nist fkridlfar Friday, July 18. 1E9 MARIAN SNEIDER Joe Finds Life Very Interesting In 1929 Joe Blumcnthal won a plaque from a civic club in Cleveland for singing ""You Be- long To My Heart." If Joe had ciedicatt <1 hi* offering to life and humanity it could have become his personal thi me song. "I love all my patients and I love all people and that's why J'm a happy man." declares Joe, who hai been an employee in the outpatient department of Mount Sir.ai Hospital for 16 years. "The MARIAN enly way to be happy is to do things for other people and even if it hurts I put a smile on my face and when I smile, the pa- tients smile. I like to cheer them up." Joe came from a poor and un- happy family. "I've learned to a] predate happiness. I was the oddest of seven children and some of my brothers and sisters were raised in an orphanage. I do all I can to make my wife, Sally, happy." One of the things that brings Sally pleasure is Joe's art. "My, look what Joe did." Sally ex- claims when she sets his work. Joe works on his pictures in 8] are hours. He had done some sketches and showed them to his fellow employees at Mount Sinai. They encouraged him to do more. "It was like a miracle." Joe says looking upward, "and the idta of doing Moses and the Ten Commandments must surely have come from God. I believe there is a Gcd who inspires me. After I got the idea I went to the library and studied pictures and afttr all that I still came away with my own feelings. What I do comes from my mind ar.d htart. I've got to draw what I feel." The first large drawing Joe did was ol the walled city of Kothenberg which won second prize in the Mount Sinai Hospi- tal employees art show. He in- tends to inter his drawing of Moses in their next exhibit. The new drawing is 33 inches long and 25 inches wide and is a col- orful testimony to Joe's rever- ence for Judaism. "I will soon be 60 years old but I am not scared of anything. I just want to keep on going, to keep my mind occupied and con- tinue with my art. I believe strongly in the Jewish religion and it inspires my drawing." Joe finds life interesting from many perspectives. He proudly shows a pair of sterling boxing gloves. "I won these in the Gold- en Gloves match in 1929." he says with a big smile and a glow in his eyes. And another part of his enthusiastic i>ersonality makes him an avid fossil col- lector. This past year Joe got anoth- er idta. How great it would be, h. thought, if the image of Rob- ert Kennedy were placed on a medal of gold, the original to be given to Mrs. Kennedy and rep- licas made to be Sold to collec- tors. He wrote to Congressman Claude Pepper and received an enthusiastic response. Joe's idea has now become Bill HR10977 as drafted by the congressman who recommended that the House Banking Committee ap- propriate $3,000 to carry out the nil a. "I wanted the original real gold medal to be presented to Mrs. Kennedy so she can show it to her children. Robert Kennedy was a fine American." So is Joe Blumenthal.
