THE RABBI SPEAKS FROM HIS PULPIT Shavuoth Living Proof Of Divine Revelation Hebrew Jerusalem who found that these scrolls were written about 2.000 years ago in an ancient Heb- rew- script, and they include a few: books of the Bible and other un- known books. After the War of In- dependence, great pains were taken to buy, with huge sums of money, the hidden scrolls, that were brought to the United States.1 It became clear that these are holy books that became disqualified and hidden, because holy books that become disqualified are not destroyed, but hidden so as not to] be damaged by man. The 2.000year-old scrolls were well preserved on account of the dry air in the Judaean desert on the shores of the Dead Sea. Sinai, i dramatic Mid- rash i c story comes to mind. The Almighty made the rounds, say the Rabbis, to Ishmael. Ks sau and to all the nations at the t i m e. offering them His law Suspicious- ly, each asked. "What is written therein?" "Thou salt not steal thou shalt not kill ..." roared the Almighty. Quickly they turned away, flat- ly refusing the Almighty and His offering. "This Torah is not for us." they declared, "For who can live without the sword and who can survive without the gun?" Still Unanswered Evidently things haven't changed much in the past 3.000 years. The Almighty is still mak- ing the rounds, and His call still remains unanswered. A great majority of the Amer ican peopie. say the pollsters, are religious and seek religion, but a religion that is convenient, timely, up-to-date, one that can fill the needs and ease the anxieties, of a 20th century civilization. The ringing words of Genesis. "Let us create man in our image." has bevn given a new twist by modern man and reads instead "Let us create God in our image." Rather than raising mankind to reach the heights of Sinai, soph isticated man would adjust the teachings of Sinai to his mediocre values and selfish standards.
