GENERAL SANITATION.
CITY OF PANAMA.
The general sanitary condition of the city is excellent and shows steady improvement under the various forces at work. While there are few mosquitoes to be found, the work of preventing their propagation is being carried on by establishing better drainage, filling wells and cisterns, and destroying tanks. During the month 171 places were reported as having larvie present, and 2 persons were fined by the authorities for having had larve present three times. One fine was i imposed for persistence in keeping an insaitary yard.
The carts engaged in the free delivery of water wre discontinued at the close of the month, hydrants having been established in the several sections where water was furnish ed .
Both the morbidity and mortality have been gratifyingly. low. No special disease has prevailed to a marked degree, and no acute contagious disease has been reported, except 1 case of rubeola and several cases of pneumonia. Of the deaths reported-62 in number, the lowest for any one month since our occupation-19 occurred in Santo Tomas Hospital, in which patients are treated from the surrounding territory as well as from the city. The greatest number of deaths caused by any one disease were caused by pneumonia, there being 10 due to this disease, while tuberculosis caused 6, and to beriberi 3 deaths were due. For these three diseases thorough' disinfection is being done.
The steady improvement in the erection of buildings continues. Nineteen plans for new houses were 'approved during the month. Street cleaning and garbage collection:
