34 During the month the French steamship France arrived at Colon with a case of smallpox on board among the contract laborers. This case had been isolated and the large personnel of the ship vaccinated. Those with families and some few who refused to be vaccinated were placed in quarantine at Colon Detention Barracks. The others, after vaccination and the disinfection of their effects, were released and sent to observation camps along the line so that they could commence work immediately. No cases of smallpox developed among those so distributed. The crew of the ship was kept under surveillance on board the vessel and a secondary case developed in the person of the baker, who was removed and isolated at the quarantine station. The ship was redisinfected and allowed to proceed. A tabulated statement of the work accomplished by this Department follows: QUARANTINE TRANSACTIONS AT THE PORTS OF ANCON AND PANAMA.
